What Does Hz Mean?
The number of hertz (abbreviated Hz) equals the number of cycles per second. The frequency of any phenomenon with regular periodic variations can be expressed in hertz, but the term is used most frequently in connection with alternating electric currents, electromagnetic waves (light, radar, etc.), and sound. It is known that the human body can generate mechanical vibrations at very low frequencies, so-called infrasonic waves. Many forms of industrial illness are thought to result from the effects of vibration on the human body. Prolonged exposure causes undue stress and discomfort. At the human whole-body resonant frequency there is maximum displacement between the organs and the skeletal structure and thus this is one frequency of vibration that should be minimized in the workplace and elsewhere. The vertical whole-body resonant frequencies of 113 fully-clothed standing humans were measured using a vibrating beam method, which imposed a very low acceleration magnitude at the subjects' feet. The overall range of resonant frequencies was found to be from 9 to 16 Hz and independent of mass, height and mass to height ratio. The mean values (+/-1 s.e.) were 12.2 +/- 0.1 Hz for males and 12.8 +/- 0.2 Hz for females with an overall mean population value of 12.3 +/- 0.1 Hz.

The transmissibility of 12 seated subjects to sinusoidal vertical vibration was measured at 12 frequencies in the range of 7 to 75 Hz. Transmissibility, the ratio of seat vibration to vertical head vibration measured on a bite-bar, was determined at each of six levels of vibration (0.2 to 4.0 m/s2 r.m.s.) in two body postures. The postures were defined by the body positions that maximised and minimised the sensation of vibration at the subjects' heads. Measurements of the fore-and-aft (ax), lateral (ay), and pitch motions of the head were measured on three subgroups. Posture was found to have a very large effect on the vibration of the head with an approximate 6:1 difference in the mean vertical head vibration of the subjects between the two postures in the range 35 to 50 Hz. In both postures the mean transmissibility of the subjects decreased as frequency increased from 7 to 75 Hz and there were statistically significant reductions in transmissibility with increasing levels of vibration.
